The Best Quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe Part 2

Posted on September 19, 2022January 6, 2023 by damperthree

This week we’re diving into round two of the best quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (you can check out Part 1 right here). It’s a pretty impressive feat to have nearly 30 movies, plus several spin-off series, coexist (however imperfectly) in the same universe. And even though not all were necessarily great (hey, remember Inhumans?), the number of truly memorable quotes from the MCU is really impressive.

So take a moment to reflect on the wisdom of Captain American, the sheer sarcasm of Iron Man, and the inspiring courage of Black Panther (among others). Some of these lines are etched in our collective memory simply because they’re so awesome, while some have taken on lives of their own outside of the MCU.

The Best Quotes from the MCU

“Wakanda forever!”(Black Panther)

Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther was another example of perfect casting in the MCU. He created the perfect hero, imperfect and at times uncertain, but devoted to doing the right thing. And when he leads his army, you can’t help but cheer.

“I need you to break in and steal some sh*t.” (Ant Man)

Ant Man was one of the MCU’s many risks that paid off in spades. Paul Rudd’s son (who was 9 years old at the time Rudd told him that he’d be playing the shrinking hero) spoke for most of us when he told his dad “I can’t wait to see how stupid that’ll be.”

But it worked, in large part because Rudd’s Ant Man was so likable. And although this line is actually spoken by Michael Douglass (as Hank Pym), it lands because of Rudd’s setup: “My days of breaking into places and stealing sh*t are done. What do you want me to do?”

“That’s my secret, Cap. I’m always angry.” Bruce Banner, right before transforming into Hulk (The Avengers)

Hulk has been a nearly impossible character to get right on film for so very long. After a few forgettable attempts, Marvel finally got it right with Mark Ruffalo. Yes, some of his best moments are as a CGI titan of rage. But we care about it because Ruffalo’s Banner is interesting. So when he utters “I’m always angry,” as he turns to face the massive Leviathan, you know he’s about to smash it but good.

 The Avengers

“Big man in a suit of armor. Take that off and what are you?”

“Genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.”

You can argue that there are two more perfectly cast characters than Captain America and Iron Man, but you’d be wrong, so don’t bother. Their relationship doesn’t exactly blossom at first, and throughout the Infinity Warseries they will see a number of personal conflicts way more serious than this first tiff. But it sets the stage forCivil War and the different motivations that propel these two iconic heroes.

 Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: “He’s my friend.”

Iron Man: “So was I.”

Oof. By this point in the MCU, Cap and Iron Man have become brothers-in-arms, and when these two find themselves battling each other, it hurts to watch because you want both to win. Cap wants to protect his friend, and Tony wants to protect the world. It’s emotionally exhausting to watch this play out, and a punch in the feels when Tony takes Cap’s intentions as a personal betrayal.

“It’s terribly well balanced” (Avengers: Age of Ultron)

With the volatile mix of egos that make up the Avengers, it’s easy to believe that they wouldn’t exactly be ready to trust Vision. Especially since he was made by Ultron. But after Vision picks up Mjolnir shortly after the entire team had all competed to see if any of them were worthy, it seals it in Thor’s mind that Vision is a worthy ally.

Fast forward to Sovokia, and Thor distracts Ultron just long enough for Vision to again take up the God of Thunder’s hammer, who proceeds to knock the crap out of the evil robot. His understated assessment is just classic.
