The Best Quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Part 1

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is MASSIVE, which makes selecting the absolute best quotes from the MCU a pretty daunting undertaking.

But we’re going to try. These are the best quotes you can use without sounding like a nerd (your experience may vary).

Starting from the not-so-humble beginning when Iron Man blasted his way on screen in 2008, the MCU now consists of 29 movies (soon to be 30 when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters later this year), plus the plethora of Disney Plus spinoff series. 

So what are the criteria used to select these quotes? It all boils down to the lines you or I could say to any other fan and not have to follow up with “you know, that one scene in Shang-Chi?” These are the quotes that, when you hear them, the tone, the context, that meaning are completely evident.

The Best Quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Tony Stark:

I am Iron Man.

This line arguably set the course for Tony Stark’s character through the rest of the Avengers storyline. Tony, as far as he’s concerned, knows best, and he’s not about to let something like a super secret government initiative tell him what to do.

 

Maria Hill: When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics?

 

Stark: Last night.

Another bit of glue for the MCU is Stark’s scientific genius. It’s what essentially created Ultron, and it’s what saved the world from the Blip and ultimately helps defeat Thanos.  So this clever bit of snark is really foreshadowing.

 Captain America

“I can do this all day.”

This is Cap in all his simple glory: determined to stand up against injustice, no matter what the cost. It’s an especially powerful scene when he uses it while fighting Iron Man.

Thor:

He’s a friend from work!

The entire tone of Thor: Ragnarok was a crazy mix of fun, dark humor, and mythic drama. One of the more fun parts was this scene where Thor is confronted by Hulk. The scene is made more enjoyable by the story of how it came to be.

Odin: 

Are you Thor, the God of Hammers?

And then one of the more serious moments came as Hela gloats over her seemingly inevitable victory over Thor. His interaction with Odin is heartfelt and powerful, even as Odin chastises his son with this burn.

 Hawkeye: 

None of this makes sense.

 

Hawkeye doesn’t get enough respect in this series. Even so, you have to love Clint’s little jab at the 4th wall in this scene from The Age of Ultron.

Peter Quill

Peter Quill: “There’s another name you might know me by. Star Lord”

Guard: “Who?”

Peter Quill: “Star Lord, man. Legendary outlaw?”

Star Lord was not your typical Marvel hero at all, and his introduction was perfect. You can just feel his disappointment when his would-be captor had no idea who “Star Lord” was.
