In the early days of the Republic, when the ghosts of the Old World still haunted the minds of early America, Halloween was once known as…Cabbage Night.
Seriously.
Young hoodlums would take to the streets and partake in a variety of cabbage-related villainy.
Newspapers the 19th century are littered with a surprising amount of cabbage horror. So, if you find yourself kept up at night because of Dracula or the undead or whatever, just remember it used to be Cabbage Night. And that’s just hilarious.
